Sawit Penawar Kanser Hati

KELAPA SAWIT PENAWAR KENSER HATI
KANSER hati atau kanser hepar merupakan salah satu kanser yang paling sering ditemui dengan kadar 250,000 hingga sejuta pesakit setahun.
Berbanding negara Barat dan negara maju yang lain, Asia Timur serta Asia Tenggara mencatatkan jumlah pesakit tertinggi.
Situasi itu menjadikan usaha untuk mencari penawar kepada penyakit ini agak lesu kerana kajian lebih tertumpu ke arah mencari penyelesaian penyakit kanser yang lain seperti kanser payu dara, kanser tulang dan kanser kulit.
Bagaimanapun faktor itu memberikan kesedaran kepada Ketua Jabatan Biokimia Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Prof. Wan Zurinah Wan Ngah untuk ‘bertapa’ dalam makmalnya selama lapan tahun bagi mencari penawar kepada penyakit kanser hati yang menjadi masalah besar kepada masyarakat Asia.
Hasil usaha keras selama lapan tahun itu akhirnya membuahkan kejayaan apabila beliau berjaya membuktikan sigma tokotrienol yang terdapat dalam vitamin E dalam minyak kelapa sawit (‘palm vitee) mampu mengurangkan proses keterukan barah hati.
Ia merupakan pertemuan pertama seumpamanya di negara ini.
Pertemuan ini dibentangkan semasa menyampaikan syarahan perdana sempena pelantikan ke jawatan profesor bertajuk ‘Kesan Perlindungan Vitamin E Kelapa Sawit Ke Atas Kanser Hepar’ di Kuala Lumpur, baru-baru ini.
Sigma tokotrienol merupakan satu daripada lapan jenis vitamin E. Jenis vitamin E ini mempunyai taburan yang luas dalam tumbuhan umum, tetapi kurang dalam minyak sayuran kecuali minyak kelapa sawit.
Justeru itulah, kajian di makmal ini ditumpukan kepada sigma tokotrienol (sejenis tokotrienol yang terbanyak dalam kelapa sawit) dan perbandingan juga dilakukan dengan sejenis lagi vitamin E yang dikenali sebagai alfa tokoferol.
Kajian ke atas vitamin E dan kanser telah banyak dilakukan dengan menggunakan model haiwan dan kajian epidemiologi.
Dalam konteks ini, pelbagai jenis kanser telah dikaji termasuk kanser oral, gaster, kolon, pankreas, hati, kulit dan payu dara.
Bagaimanapun, sebelum ini, kajian yang dilakukan adalah menggunakan alfa tokoferol sebagai sumber vitamin E.
Di Institut Penyelidikan Minyak Kelapa Sawit Malaysia (PORIM) sigma tokotrienol dikenal pasti sebagai sumber vitamin E untuk menghalang pembentukan sel barah payu dara.
Dalam melengkapkan kajian, Prof. Wan Zurinah menggunakan dua kaedah kajian praklinikal digunakan iaitu ‘in vitro’ dan ‘in vivo’.
Kajian ‘in vitro’ melibatkan kajian luaran di mana keberkesanan sigma tokotrienol terhadap sel kanser hati diuji dalam bekas kultur.
Kaedah ‘in vivo’ pula melibatkan penyuntikan sel barah ke dalam haiwan kajian iaitu tikus dan kemudiannya diberikan suplimen sigma tokotrienol.
Hasil kajian mendapati dengan dos rendah 30 mg/kg diet, alfa tokotrienol dapat mengurangkan keterukan proses keterukan barah hati dan lebih berkesan lagi jika suplimentasi dimulakan awal iaitu serentak atau empat minggu selepas barah dikesan.
Jika pembentukan kanser telah berkembang, pengambilan vitamin E ini kurang memberi kesan perlindungan. Bagaimanapun kesan perlindungan akan lebih ketara apabila pengambilan vitamin diteruskan sehingga sembilan bulan.
Menurut Prof. Wan Zurinah, hasil daripada penemuan ini telah membuahkan kepada penyelidikan-penyelidikan lain yang berkaitan.
Antaranya menurut beliau ialah melihat kesan Vitamin E ini ke atas manusia terutama mereka yang mempunyai risiko tinggi untuk menghadapi penyakit kanser hati seperti pesakit hepitatis B kronik.
Katanya, ini akan melibatkan kajian ‘Nutrition intervention trials’ yang selalunya melibatkan perbelanjaan yang sangat besar dan masa yang lama.
Di samping itu katanya, kajian lain yang boleh dilakukan ialah untuk melihat keperluan harian (RDA) vitamin E untuk orang normal dan pesakit.

Vitamin E Offers Powerful Protection Against Cataracts of the Eye

According to research, two-thirds of all Americans will have a cataract by age eighty-five. There is growing evidence that vitamin E may help to prevent this most common age-related vision problem. A cataract is a cloudy or opaque covering that grows over the lens of the eye, which can cause total or partial blindness. A cataract can distort vision by making objects look vague and fuzzy. If the cloudiness on the eye lens becomes so severe it hampers vision, the cataract must be surgically removed. Four million U.S. men and women have cataracts, and most people who have them are over the age of sixty. Cataracts are so commonplace in the United States that more than 10 percent of the Medicare budget is spent on cataract surgery.
In rare cases, a cataract may be caused by a genetic problem, but the overwhelming majority of cases are caused by cellular damage to the eye lens inflicted by exposure to ultraviolet and visible light. The lens of the eye is particularly susceptible to light-induced lipid and protein oxidation, a major factor in the majority of cases of cataracts. The lens contains proteins called crystallins, which, when damaged, can become irregular and refract light in the wrong way, thereby leading to cataract formation.
There are several reasons why I am optimistic that vitamin E may prove to be a useful tool in the prevention of cataracts of the eye. First, numerous animal studies have shown that vitamin E can arrest and reverse the development of cataracts symptoms and can protect the sensitive lens tissue from oxidative damage. Second, population studies have documented that people with low blood levels of antioxidants E, C, and carotenoids are more likely to develop cataracts than those with higher levels. The third, and perhaps the most persuasive, bit of evidence is a recent study that actually contrasted the self-reported consumption of supplements by 175 cataract-free patients over fifty-five to that of 175 patients of the same age group with cataracts. The cataract-free group used significantly more vitamins C and E than the group that already had developed cataracts. I think it is fair to say that even if vitamin E does not do the job alone, in combination with other network antioxidants it may offer powerful protection against cataracts of the eye.

Does Vitamin E Tocotrienols Prevent Breast Cancer?


Since one out of every eight women is destined to develop breast cancer, a tremendous amount of research has been undertaken to discover ways of preventing this common killer. One compound that has been extensively studied for its role in preventing breast cancer is tocotrieonls in vitamin E.
When reviewing all the published evidence, it does not appear that alpha-tocopherol vitamin E confers a protective effect against breast cancer. Yet studies show that women who consume foods high in other forms of vitamin E (tocotrienols) substantially reduce their risk of contracting breast cancer (by as much as 90%).
A cardinal feature of breast tumors are rapidly proliferating cells. Estrogen drugs promote hyper-proliferation and this is one reason why these drugs may quadruple the incidence of breast cancer.
Studies of breast cancer cells in culture indicate that tocotrienols have potent effects in inhibiting proliferation and inducing apoptosis (cancer cell death). These studies show that alpha-tocopherol does not have this same benefit.
Alpha tocopherol acetate is the most widespread supplement form of vitamin E, yet the evidence points to other forms of vitamin E as being responsible for the dramatic reduction in breast cancer incidence observed in great human studies.
The individual tocopherols and tocotrienols have different biological activities as they relate to their effects on cellular function. Gamma tocopherol, for instance, has demonstrated significant cancer prevention effects compared to alpha-tocopherol.
The potential anti-cancer effects of gamma tocopherol and the tocotrienols merits aggressive human clinical research to determine if women who supplement with these unique forms of vitamin E can reduce their risk of contracting breast cancer. Further research will be conducted on breast cancer patients to see if the addition of tocotrienols to tamoxifen improves long-term survival rates.
There is no compelling evidence that standard (alpha-tocopherol) vitamin E supplements reduce breast cancer incidence. While alpha-tocopherol has been shown to protect against a wide range of other diseases, it would appear that the tocotrienols are the ideal form of vitamin E to specifically reduce breast cancer risk

GEORGE TOWN: Palm oil is set to shed its negative image as more scientific researches on the commodity revealed its potential as a cure for many illnesses.
Plantation, Industries and Commodities Minister Tan Sri Bernard Dompok said research had revealed that the commodity provided a natural remedy to many ailments including fatty liver and stroke.

He said such positive developments could offset misconceptions about palm oil.

"While the government continues to work on how the industry can increase its productivity in a more sustainable manner without using more land, such new researches will open doors to new possibilities and markets.
"Although the industry has been accused of being environmentally unfriendly, it is also a source of renewable energy such as biogas and biomass."

He was speaking after a presentation by Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) researchers Dr Enrico Magosso and Professor Ibrahim Lutfi Shuaib on the use of palm tocotrienols (palm Vitamin E) in treating non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and preventing stroke.

Palm oil is to date the richest source of tocotrienol, the superior form of Vitamin E that is high in antioxidants.

Tocotrienols obtained the Self-Affirmed GRAS (Generally Regarded as Safe) status in September 2007 from the US Food and Drug Administration.

Apart from being used in food like margarine, salad dressing, mayonnaise and potato chips, tocotrienol has also been proven to contain anti-cancer properties as well as neuro and vascular protective properties.

Dr Magosso, an Italian researcher from USM's School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, said after a one-year clinical trial on 64 volunteers suffering from NAFLD, 20 out of 30 patients treated with tocotrienol showed improvements with 15 being cured.

He said although more studies must be conducted to convince people that tocotrienol works, the discovery had presented an answer to NAFLD, a silent disease that affects 90 per cent of diabetic and obese people of all ages and 60 per cent of Malaysians with high-cholesterol.

"This natural remedy has proven effective in treating NAFLD and has every potential to be the treatment of choice. The market opportunity of 500 million people worldwide is vast for Malaysia, which is the world's second largest palm oil producer."

Tocotrienol has also proven to work in preventing stroke, the nation's third largest cause of death after heart diseases and cancer.

Ibrahim said in a two-year study on 10 people with white matter lesion, a neuronal damage in the brain that is related to stroke, five out of seven subjects who were treated with tocotrienol showed improvements.

"Only one subject out of the remaining three, who received placebo treatments, showed improvements while the condition of the other two deteriorated.

"We hope tocotrienol, when used widely in the field of medicine, will have a positive impact in neuro treatment and prevention of cardiovascular diseases," said Ibrahim, who is from USM's School of Advanced Medical and Dental Institute.




PENEMUAN USM: EKSTRAK KELAPA SAWIT BANTU CEGAH PENYAKIT HATI DAN OTAK


PULAU PINANG, 10 Ogos: Pokok kelapa sawit bukan sahaja menghasilkan minyak yang berkualiti.

Malah kini, satu jenis vitamin E, yang juga dikenali sebagai ‘tocotrienol’, dikenalpasti berupaya membantu dalam pencegahan kerosakan otak akibat kecederaan zon putih otak (White Matter Lesion).

Menerusi kajian yang dijalankan oleh sekumpulan penyelidik Pusat Pengajian Sains Farmasi dan Institut Perubatan dan Pergigian Termaju (IPPT) Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), vitamin E kelapa sawit ini juga mampu menghalang kerosakan hati akibat pengumpulan lemak yang boleh kemudiannya membawa kepada kegagalan hati.

Penyelidikan yang diterajui oleh Prof. Yuen Kah Hay dan Prof. Ibrahim Lutfi Shuaib bermula sejak tahun 2007 dan dibiayai menerusi geran penyelidikan Lembaga Minyak Sawit Malaysia bernilai lebih RM4 juta.

Menurut Prof. Ibrahim Lutfi Shuaib, ‘White Matter Lesion’ ini memberikan gambaran pengurangan aliran darah ke bahagian otak seseorang dan kerap memperlihatkan potensi risiko bagi seseorang itu berhadapan dengan penyakit angin akhmar.

“Kita pada awalnya mengambil sejumlah 400 sukarelawan yang kemudiannya diklasifikasikan kepada dua kumpulan iaitu kumpulan MRI dan bukan MRI.

“Kumpulan MRI terlibat di dalam kajian bagi tempoh dua tahun sementara kumpulan bukan MRI hanya bagi tempoh 1 tahun. Sub-kumpulan dalam kedua-dua kumpulan ini seterusnya diberikan kapsul tocotrienol 400mg setiap hari. Berdasarkan kajian ini, kita mendapati tocotrienol memberikan kesan positif kepada sukarelawan yang terlibat ini,” kata beliau ketika membentangkan hasil kajian kepada Menteri Perusahaan Perladangan dan Komoditi Malaysia, Tan Sri Bernard Giluk Dompok di Bilik Persidangan Canselori.

Turut hadir di dalam pembentangan yang sama ialah Datuk Dr. Mohd Basri Wahid, Ketua Pengarah, Lembaga Minyak Sawit Malaysia, Prof. Asma Ismail, Timbalan Naib Canselor (Penyelidikan dan Inovasi) USM, Prof. Madya Syed Azhar Syed Sulaiman, Dekan Pusat Pengajian Sains Farmasi USM, Dr. Hj. Ramli Saad, Pengarah IPPT USM, David Ho, Pengarah Urusan, Hovid Berhad dan M. Nagarajan, Setiausaha Bahagian (Minyak Sayuran, Lelemak dan Sago), Kementerian Perusahaan Perladangan dan Komoditi Malaysia.

Dalam pembentangan yang sama, Enrico Magosso daripada Pusat Pengajian Sains Farmasi pula berkata pihaknya telah menjalankan kajian kepada 60 sukarelawan dewasa yang menerima 400mg tocotrienol dan kajian tersebut menunjukkan perubahan positif kepada 50% sukarelawan yang mengambil bahagian.

“Hasil kajian ini akan dibentangkan kepada 'Liver Meeting of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases' di Boston, Amerika Syarikat,” kata beliau.

Tambah beliau lagi, Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease' (NAFLD) tidak mempunyai terapi ubat dan kajian yang dijalankan oleh mereka adalah yang pertama untuk menunjukkan bahawa tocotrienol yang dijual sebagai makanan tambahan boleh merawat penyakit itu.
